Teach For Italy – Insegnare Per l’Italia is an organization fighting educational inequality in Italy. They are a member of Teach For All, a global network present in 53 countries with the goal to expand educational opportunities in low-income and vulnerable communities.
Teach For Italy’s mission is to convince the best graduates from the best Italian universities to dedicate at least two years of their professional life teaching in the most underserved school districts in Italy. These brilliant young graduates are trained and supported in the two years in the classroom, to allow them to have an immediate impact on their students, as well as the schools and communities where they are placed. Over the long term, however, this is also a leadership development program, which aims to select the best young leaders in the country and cultivate and support the type of leadership required to transform the public education system. Their goal is to make sure that the graduates who take part in this program will one day be teachers, principals, superintendents, or work in the Ministry of Education or in the educational start-up ecosystem. This model has achieved incredible impact globally and is currently placing 16,000 teachers internationally, with 60,000 people who have participated in the program.
Italy is living an educational crisis: the country suffers the highest early drop-out rates in the EU (14.5% and rising) and has the highest percentage of young people who are not in employment, education nor training – NEET – (30% versus a 15% OECD average). The country is losing an entire future generation and we want to do our part to reverse these trends.
Teach For Italy launched in 2019. They have a partnership with the Ministry of Education, nationally and at the regional level, and with Italy’s 15 best universities. The Agnelli Foundation has just become a part of their board, through Andrea Gavosto, its President, and they have signed a partnership with Boston Consulting Group (BCG). They have just opened their recruitment campaign for the 2020 inaugural program and have already received more than 200 applications. Their goal is to select a first cohort of 20 Teach For Italy fellows by this June, train them over the summer and place them in Italy’s most underserved schools in September 2020.
