Artificial intelligence and sustainability are transforming how consumers shop across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA). A recent study by KPMG China and GS1 Hong Kong shows that spending habits are evolving quickly, and the differences between these two markets are becoming more important for retailers.

While GBA consumers show higher trust in AI tools, Hong Kong shoppers remain more cautious. As a result, companies must tailor their strategies to local expectations.

AI Is Changing the Retail Experience

Retail is shifting from simple transactions to technology-driven experiences. In Hong Kong, many consumers enjoy interactive journeys such as gamification and smart displays. At the same time, image-based search, AI-powered recommendations and automated checkout systems are becoming more common.

The study reveals that 51% of GBA consumers are satisfied with AI-powered services, compared to 39% in Hong Kong. Therefore, retailers must adapt. AI can increase efficiency, but the human touch remains essential, especially in Hong Kong where trust levels are lower.

Sustainability Influences Purchase Decisions

Sustainability is now a key factor for many consumers. The survey shows that 42% of GBA shoppers and 33% of Hong Kong shoppers are willing to pay more for sustainable products. This shift shows that transparency and responsible sourcing strongly influence buying decisions.

Consumers want to know where products come from, how they are made and whether they meet environmental standards. Because of this, retailers are adopting QR codes, digital traceability and clearer sustainability communication.

Different Markets Require Different Strategies

The differences between Hong Kong and the GBA make one thing clear: a single strategy cannot work for both markets. GBA shoppers are more confident with AI. Hong Kong consumers focus more on trust, reliability and pricing. Therefore, retail strategies must be adapted to each market’s behaviour.

Balancing AI With Human Interaction

AI tools offer speed and convenience. However, shoppers still expect empathy and personal interaction. Retailers must build models that combine automation with human support. This balance improves satisfaction and increases trust in technology.

Sustainability as a Core Value

Sustainability must be integrated into the entire product journey. Consumers reward brands that demonstrate real commitment to environmental responsibility. Clear communication about sourcing, recycling and product lifecycle helps build loyalty.

Wellness and Quality of Life Are Rising Priorities

Consumers in Hong Kong and the GBA are increasingly focused on health and wellness. According to the study, GBA shoppers show a stronger willingness to invest in wellness-related products. As these preferences grow, retailers must adjust their offerings and brand messages.

Conclusion

AI adoption in retail across Hong Kong and the GBA is accelerating. At the same time, sustainability and wellness are shaping new spending habits. Retailers who adapt quickly — by combining AI innovation, human interaction and transparent sustainability — will gain a strategic advantage. Those who delay may lose relevance in this fast-changing market.
